RHYS Barber and Georgie Carberry are the 2022 recipients of the best on ground awards at the traditional ANZAC Day clash between Horsham Demons and Horsham Saints.

Horsham Demons senior footballer Barber won the Bert Perry Medal, which is awarded to the most courageous player on the oval.

Ruckman Barber said he was honoured and to be the recipient of the medal was a bit of a surprise.

“I thought our midfield worked well together during the game,” he said.

“For a lot of us it was our first game together and I thought we worked well as a team.”

This year marks the first year the two clubs have attributed the ANZAC Day best on ground medal for the netballers to a person.

Horsham Demons president Ash Hopper said the clubs came together to research a suitable ex-servicewoman to name the medal after.

The medal is now known as the Ivy Vera Delany, who was a Transport Corp staff nurse in the Australian Imperial Force.

Horsham Demons netballer Carberry said it was a privilege to be the first recipient of the award.

The goal defender dedicated the award to her whole team when it was presented to her after the game.

“Our game was a very team game, played well and it was fun; it was physical and hard but it was fun,” she said.

“It’s always a tough match against Horsham Saints but it was a good first hit out.”
