Burras excited to launch women's football team
The Minyip Murtoa Football Netball Club is holding a come-and-try night on Wednesday, December 11, at the Murtoa Football Oval at 6 p.m., with the aim of having a senior women's football team compete in 2025.
Tegan Kerrins, part of the club's start-up committee, said there has been an overwhelming response.
"We put out an expression of interest a few months back, and a survey on how things might look, and we had approximately 20 females put their names in, a lot of them for the senior grade, which is an outstanding response," Kerrins said.
"A few younger girls have also put their names down, which is exciting.
"Their decisions are based on whether they could play netball and football as they want to play both, and if we can get this up and running, it's something we want to be part of."
The club has been looking at avenues to achieve this and hopes more people will put their hands up.
"We want to get as many females playing as possible, and creating a pathway is the end goal," Kerrins said.
"For our club, it means so much. Many young girls want to play football, and if we can give them an avenue to play with other females, we aim to do that.
"We want to introduce the senior team. If we can get enough of the younger girls interested, we would also love to have a junior team.
"We will try to give everyone that wants to play somewhere a place to play, which is the goal as a club.
"We are looking for coaches and volunteers and want to grow the volunteer base and have new families around the club."
The come-and-try day is just to get things moving, for people to meet each other, and for girls to get footballs in their hands.
"We just want to get everyone involved as it will be the first time they kick a football, so we will teach them the basis in how to handball and kick," Kerrins said.
"For those that have played before, it's building on their skills. Afterwards, there will be a barbecue tea as a club, and we want to support everyone."
